Resumptive Pronouns in Relative Clauses

This article analyzes resumptive pronouns in relative clauses in Slovenian and a few other Slavic languages within the framework of generative grammar. Relative clauses introduced by a conjunction and those introduced by a whpronoun appear both with and without resumptive pronouns, yet the use of resumption is not arbitrary. It establishes the properties of the available relativization patterns and suggests a structural analysis of relative clauses, explaining the mechanisms that give rise to resumption.Downloads
