Inclusive Terminology: the Case of Medical Terminology

This article discusses inclusive terminology, which is based on recognizing diversity, respecting individuals, and following the principles of equality, and aims to prevent stereotyping and discrimination against vulnerable and marginalized groups. The article defines various ways of using inclusive terminology and focuses on the mechanisms by which inclusive terminology is becoming established in medicine. In addition, it presents possible causes and reasons for terminological intervention initiatives in this field that are supported by the argument of inclusive terminology.

The Standardology of Slovenian: Is Standard Slovenian Closer to Early-Type or Late-Type Standardization?

Haugen’s model of language standardization is presented together with its most prominent additional distinctions (Joseph, Subačius), followed by the characterization of standard Slovenian as an example of late-type standardization according to the selection time, social position of the language, type of development, differences between the written and spoken codes, perceptual evaluation of these differences, and dialect basis awareness of the standard. Finally, some key characteristics that make standard Slovenian similar to and different from other early- or late-type standard languages are presented.

Pronunciation and Choice of English Spelling Variety in Bilingual Dictionaries for Slovenian Immigrants to the United States

Around 1900, the first bilingual dictionaries for Slovenian immigrants to the United States appeared on both sides of the Atlantic. This article analyzes how pronunciation and spelling were addressed in the front matter and body of four dictionaries (Kubelka 1904; Kubelka 1912; Košutnik 1912; Kern 1919). The discussion addresses the authors’ explanations of pronunciation and how these were conveyed to the target audience. The use of both American and British spelling variants is examined, at a time when both types of spelling were widely used in the US.

Identifying New Multi-Word Prepositions in Croatian: the Preposition + Noun + Preposition Pattern

Multi-word prepositions (MWPs) are complex lexical units, typically formed from prepositions and nouns. Because many are still evolving semantically, morphologically, and syntactically, no definitive list of MWPs exists. This article examines three-word expressions with the structure preposition + noun + preposition. Using regular expressions, these patterns were applied to a Croatian language corpus to identify and analyze potential MWPs based on features such as frequency of use, variability of elements, semantics, and other relevant properties.

Recognizing Abbreviations and Their Expansions in English Criminal Justice and Security Texts Using the Krajšavar Algorithm, ChatGPT, and Perplexity

This article examines the application of artificial intelligence tools, specifically ChatGPT and Perplexity, for recognizing abbreviations and their corresponding expansions in English professional texts dealing with criminal justice and security. The results are compared with those obtained through text filtering using the Krajšavar algorithm. The English texts used for filtering with both AI tools and the algorithm were manually collected based on a typological classification of English criminal justice and security texts. This article presents the main features of the Krajšavar algorithm, outlines its development and functioning, and describes the text collection and material preparation for filtering. The analysis focuses on using ChatGPT and Perplexity for the automatic recognition of abbreviation–expansion pairs in English criminal justice and security texts. The filtering results are evaluated and subsequently compared with those obtained through the Krajšavar algorithm and manual verification.

Design and Construction of the Corpus of Scientific Texts of Contemporary Slovenian

This paper presents the Corpus of Scientific Texts of Contemporary Slovenian, a specialized written corpus of Slovenian comprising 33,604,256 tokens from 884 scientific and expert texts, primarily in the fields of social sciences and the humanities, published mainly between 2000 and 2023. We focus on describing the text-type composition of the corpus, the technical procedures used in the preprocessing of corpus texts, corpus annotation, text encoding formats and corpus accessibility. We also discuss the rationale for constructing the corpus and its practical applications, aiming to outline the specific characteristics and advantages of the Corpus of Scientific Texts of Contemporary Slovenian in comparison with other Slovenian corpora that include specialized texts.

Proto-Slavic *(w)ǫsъ ‘moustache’: problems of reconstruction

This article explores whether the form *wǫsъ or *ǫsъ existed in Late Proto-Slavic. It is demonstrated that Old Church Slavic, Old Serbian, and Old Czech data speak rather in favor of the second variant. The modern Czech form vousy ‘beard’ cannot be considered a reliable argument. At the same time, it is shown that the reconstruction *ǫsъ does not contradict the traditional etymology of this word and does not support the alternative version put forward by Oleg Trubachev. The author proposes two explanations for the loss of initial w- by the form *(w)ǫsъ in Late Proto-Slavic.

The Eastern Rovte Dialects in the Slovenian Linguistic Atlas (SLA)

The eastern Rovte dialects (the Horjul, Škofja Loka, and Poljane dialects), which developed on the Upper Carniolan dialect base of southern Slovenian, were documented relatively early during fieldwork for the Slovenian Linguistic Atlas (SLA). Tine Logar’s research began here in the mid-1940s, and the most recent student records date back to the 1980s and 1990s. Because none of the dialects have yet been described in detail, this article presents the starting points for further research based on the phonetic material for the SLA.

Lucien Tesnière's L’Atlas pour servir à l’étude du duel en slovène, published in 1925, was first translated into Slovene only in 2022 as Atlas za študij dvojine v slovenščini and was actualized as a digital prototype within an interdisciplinary project of two faculties of the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering. The article describes historical circumstances of the composition of atlas, its reception, a long way to the translation and prototype production, as well as plans for projects made possible by digitization.

Development of a User Interface Prototype for an Interactive Atlas Based on Tesnière’s Linguistic Atlas for Studying the Slovenian Dual

This article presents part of the development of an interactive version of Tesnière’s Linguistic atlas for studying the Slovenian dual. The work focuses on the development of a user interface and includes the following steps: analysis of comparable interactive atlases, user research, user experience design, interface design, and creation of a prototype. The result of the work presented is a working prototype that will serve as a basis for developing an interactive version of Tesnière’s linguistic atlas.

Slovenian Dialect Material from the Papers of Lucien Tesnière

This article focuses on the Slovenian dialect material collected by Lucien Tesnière between 1920 and 1924 for his dissertation Les formes du duel en slovène (Dual Forms in Slovenian) and the accompanying ﬁrst Slavic linguistic atlas, Atlas linguistique pour servir à l’étude du duel en slovène (Linguistic Atlas for Studying the Slovenian Dual). Preserved in the author’s papers at the National Library of France and never before published in full, this material has recently become available online for further research. The article presents the complete questionnaire of 424 items and an analysis of Tesnière’s network, deﬁnes the subnetwork of eighty-seven dialects recorded according to the questionnaire, and outlines the structure of this part of Tesnière’s papers.

Lucien Tesnière and Carinthian Slovenian Dialects

This article begins with an account of the background to the Carinthian plebiscite (1920) and French foreign policy, which made Tesnière’s linguistic and geographical study of the Slovenian dual possible. As a member of the international plebiscite committee, Tesnière had a special connection to Carinthia and described the situation there in detail from a “Slavic perspective” in the introduction to his atlas. The analysis of the Carinthian material shows that he succeeded in overcoming international political obstacles. Furthermore, he rejected the thesis that there was a connection between the preservation of the dual and cultural backwardness.
