Sln. strníti (se) ‘unite’ is regarded as having no correspondences in other Slavic languages. I argue that the semantics of ‘contact’—an established component and essentially a dominant of the verb’s semantics—makes it possible to presume its origin in the word family *rět‑/*ręt‑ ‘find’, which presupposes an initial form *sъrětnǫti ‘meet’ with the transformations tn > n and sr > str (as in Rus. стренуть, Cz. střetnout, Slk. stretnúť) and a secondary reduced grade of root vocalism.Downloads
