A Historical Developmental Overview of the Concept of Parenthesis in Slovenian Linguistics

Parenthesis is a phenomenon encompassing a complex and varied set of phenomena. A historical developmental overview of the concept of parenthesis in Slovenian linguistics indicates that works have treated parenthesis from three approaches: normative, grammatical, and discursive. The basis of all three approaches is patterns of written discourse. The discussions are limited with regard to the morphological occurrence of parenthesis; that is, by their placement and demarcation from other parts of the text. Following Anton Breznik, the established term vrinjeni stavek ‘inserted clause’ has been introduced into slovenian linguistics; this term points to the definition of the phenomenon at the syntactic level.Downloads
