Burying the Hatchet: Phrasemes During the War in Ukraine in Croatian and German Newspaper Articles

This article focuses on evaluative phrasemes in Croatian and German online newspaper articles published in March 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The study clarifies the evaluative function of phrasemes in Croatian and German and identifies interlingual similarities and differences. The results of the analysis indicate that the categories of (in)capable and (un)reliable predominate in both corpora. Journalists critically analyze wartime events by assessing their success or failure and by evaluating the competences of leading politicians, including their decisiveness, caution, and reliability in managing wartime situations. The evaluative category of (dis)honest is addressed more frequently in the Croatian corpus because sincerity and transparency are emphasized as social values. In the German corpus, the evaluative category of (un)ethical occurs more frequently, suggesting that moral integrity of politicians is more highly valued in German society
