A new milestone from the vicinity of Sirmium
Abstract
The Roman milestone under the examination (fig. 1 , 2 ) , was found in 1979 in the graveyard of the village of Dobrinci (Caput Bassianense) and transferred to the Museum of Srem in Sremska Mitrovica (Sirmium).1 Dedicated to Septimius Severus, perhaps also to Caracalla (the end of the inscription is lost),2 it can be dated in the years A. D. 198-202 (Severus carries the title Parthicus since January 198). The milestone was erected, in our opinion, on the occasion of the emperor's presumed visit to Sirmium in 202. Since one inscription, found in Viminacium, 4lh of April, Caracalla's birthday, on the very day when in 196, also in Viminacium, Caracalla was nominated Caesar),6 it is certain that, on his return from the East to Rome, Severus passed also through Sirmium, most probably in April 202.
