Abstract

The editorial committee of Arheološki vestnik has decided to publish the lecture of Jaroslav Šašel, which he gave in Milan in 1987 (Milano capitale dell'Impcro) and for which he was unable to complete the footnotes. In a short survey of the military history of Mediolanum in the 4,h Century, he emphasises the importance of the Alpine blockside system, which protected the approaches from the Eastern Alpine Region into Italy and defended all of the northern Italian towns, but above all Mediolanum. This system, the construction of which had already begun in the 3 Century, grew into the Tractus ltaliae circa Alpcs in the 4th Century, which coincides with the development and increased importance of Mediolanum.
