Metaphorical meaning derivation from the perspective of syntagmatics

Metaphor is ordinarily understood especially as a paradigmatically defined entity based on associativity, of contents. In the exact treatment of metaphor as a lexico-semantic entity, the syntagmatic relationships in particular are in the foreground. This is reflected at several levels: in connecting semantic elements in metaphorically derived meanings, in connecting metaphorical words into phrases, and in creating sentences in which a lexicalized metaphor is realized.Downloads
