Abstract

We discuss the splitting of the sentential negative particle from the finite verb in Western Slovenian, a feature that distinguishes Wes ern Slovenian from Standard Slovenian. We ran an acceptability experiment to investigate the extent to which this possibility has been generalized across different grammatical patterns. Results show that the phenomenon is syntactically more generalized than might follow from some cursory remarks in the literature. Judgements of Western Slovenian speakers are contrasted with those of Standard Slovenian speakers.
