Abstract

In the history of Slovenia, the relationship between culture and identity is particularly visible in the second half of the 19th century. The "Glasbena matica" Music Society distinguished itself from other forms of culture in two directions: on the one hand, with its political orientation through demands for the autonomy of Slovenian culture, and on the other hand, with an ethical direction through efforts to confirm the autochthonic character of Slovenian music.
