Abstract

The article presents some significant findings based on research into the origin of a manuscript music manual, Fundamenta, preserved in the library of the Franciscan monastery in Novo mesto. It consists of a theoretical introduction imparting fundamental knowledge about music theory and thoroughbass and a number of keyboard compositions designed for teaching at an elementary level. The research embraced three different areas of investigation: a study of paper and watermarks, a comparative analysis of hands, and finally a comparison of the binding of the Fundamenta with that of all other similarly bound manuscripts and prints preserved in the same archive.
