Eighth-mode tracts represent a closely connected group of chant, both by their appurtenance to the eighth mode and through their use of standard melodic phrases. The analysis allows a reconstruction of their formation process. This article presents a hypothesis on how eighth-mode tracts have remained in existence and how they were created before and during the use of musical notation.Downloads
