Veliki Kamen

Povzetek

Veliki Kamen, a small village in the vicinity of Senovo has been known up to the present as a finding place of rich graves of the Roman period. The occasional finds in the years 1972, 1973 and 1974 have completed the archeological picture of this place. Working behind the house of V. Omerza, Veliki Kamen No. 5, the fragments of two Roman tombstones were excavated. Later by digging the ditch for the waterworks, material of the prehisto[1]ric period and traces of the settlement of the Roman period were found. The settlement extended in the length of cca 400 m. The traces of several houses were found In the western part of the ditch there were fragments of prehistoric ceramics and a stone axe. The matter of special interest is the size of the settlement. The author supposes over ten buildings (most of them are of the same length —• 10,50 m). Beside the other problems there is also an important question of the location of the prehistoric settlement. There is a considerable probability that the finds were washed ashore from the hill Šikovec. The extend and the character of the Roman period settlement are pretty problematic, because they were stated only according to the finds in the ditch of the waterworks. The similar form of the settlement in Slovenia can be found in Slovenska Bistrica and Dolga vas pri Lendavi. It is also interesting that there is a great similarity with the La Tene period houses from Darvella (Trun, Graubünden-Grischun, Switzerland), which were built in murrus Gallicus technique and were of the same length of 10,50 m. According to the author’s opinion the autohton inhabitants lived in the settlement (what is represented by house urns, thatched houses, the lack of terra sigillata in the graves and the remote position from the Roman road). The Roman finds in Veliki Kamen date from the first two centuries A. D. — the later elements are missing. The more concise statements about this settlement won’t be known earlier than the precise topography of the area and systematic excavation has been carried out
