The Image of a Man on a Brooch from Bled

Abstract

This article about the image of a man on an Early Medieval brooch from Bled is a summary of the author's B.A. thesis titled Imago imperatoris, defended in January 1998 in the Department of Art History at the University of Ljubljana.

The unusual depiction raised a series of questions, and with the aid of iconographic analysis, the author succeeded in recognizing a symbolic image of a ruler. The highly schematized but nonetheless recognizable image represents a means of communication in a given area and time.
