Some Observations on Ivana Kobilca’s Painting the Souvan Madonna in the Light of Contemporary Commissioning and Exhibiting Practices

The article presents Kobilca’s image of the Souvan Madonna, created for a private client. It dates the painting, about which the painter corresponded in detail with her family, to the first months of 1900. The article discusses Kobilca’s way of working on the painting, her contact with specific clients – Uršula Souvan and her family – and the painter’s reservations about potentially exhibiting the painting in the second exhibition of the Slovenian Art Society in Ljubljana in 1902. Although the Souvan Madonna is not among Kobilca’s most important paintings, analysing it helps us better understand the painter’s attitude towards her clients and exhibiting in her hometown of Ljubljana.
