ISOTOPIC PERSPECTIVES ON THE WATER CYCLE AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Brief description:
The isotopic composition of water molecules offers a uniquely powerful lens for exploring both recent and ancient climate change. Variations in stable isotopes (16O, 17O, 18O, 1H, 2H) and radioactive isotopes (3H) provide key insights into temperature shifts, precipitation patterns, evaporation processes, and other hydrological dynamics. By monitoring isotopic signatures in precipitation and diverse water sources, scientists can uncover critical environmental evidence of local, regional, and global climate responses to ongoing global changes—information essential for anticipating future climate trajectories.
Beyond modern observations, isotopic analysis of natural archives such as ice cores, lake and marine sediments, tree rings, and fossil remains enables the reconstruction of past temperature fluctuations, hydrological cycles, and atmospheric circulation patterns over timescales ranging from decades to millennia.
For this special issue, we invite original research and review articles on isotopic investigations across the atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere that highlight the water cycle’s role in tracing climate change, past and present.
