The article introduces Slovenian material on 78 rpm gramophone discs recorded in the period from the earliest recordings to the beginning of the Second World War. The author addresses whether these recordings, which were made for commercial reasons, have sufficiently important cultural, ethnomusicological, folklore, and ethnochoreological value to serve as a good source for ethnomusicology and folklore research. He also discusses how many Slovenian sound recordings associated with folk music are recorded on old gramophone records and how this material can be properly interpreted on the basis of scant written information accompanying the discs.
