Plato and Lacan: Eros, Lógos … and the Thing

The paper is an interpretation of Plato’s Symposium in conjunction with some of Plato’s other dialogues as well as psychoanalysis. Plato’s philosophy as such cannot be considered without thematizing love (Eros) because, for him, there is no philosophy without love. In the paper, I focus in particular on the speech about Eros that Socrates heard from Diotima, a woman from Mantinea. The article covers a broader conception of love in Plato in connection with Lacan’s interpretation of Plato’s Symposium. Namely, love in psychoanalysis is a transfer. In Symposium, Lacan recognizes Socrates as a forerunner of the psychoanalyst who is skilled at managing transference love, which Lacan defines as attributing knowledge to a subject. Thus, we will outline what transference love is, and what connection this fundamental psychoanalytic concept has with other Lacanian concepts such as objet petit a, desire, méconnaissance, unconscious, and Jouissance.
