On “Lacan’s debt to Descartes”

In the article, I take as a point of departure Badiou’s critique of Lacanian theory of subject, as described at the end of his Being and Event. I continue with the general Lacanian notion of the subject in psychoanalysis being identical to the subject of Cartesian cogito. In the analysis of both an emphasis is put on the way each notion of the subject is related to some division between the two places. Through discussion of Cartesian subject, I also try to open the possibility of demonstrating how the two stages of Cartesian doubt could be related with Badiou’s later two notions of the subject: the constructive one, which is described in Cartesian doubt as suspension of will, and the faithful one, which in Descartes passes from doubt to decision of thought.
