Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between medieval and early modern science through Grosseteste’s work De iride seu de iride et speculo. A. C. Crombie in the work Augustine to Galileo considers Grosseteste’s optics, his so-called quantitative law of refraction, as a concrete and important example of the experimental method of modern science. In opposition to Crombie, this paper attempts to demonstrate that since Grosseteste’s so-called quantitative law of refraction, expressed in the work On the rainbow, is based on metaphysical assumptions on economy and uniformity of nature, it can in no way be seen as quantitative in the parlance of modern experimental science. Therefore, it can better be signified as qualitative.
