Abstract

The only research institute in Slovenia that—from its founding to the present—has been entirely devoted to the themes of international migration through its research activities, teaching, and practical application of scholarly knowledge is celebrating its fortieth anniversary as part of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU). The institute had previously operated—under another name—within the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), as did most of the institutes that comprise the academy’s Research Centre today. With the
Research Centre’s founding in 1981 and its rapid development in the following years, the conditions were in place for the then Institute for Emigration Studies at SAZU, established just four years earlier, to be the last of SAZU’s institutes to join what is now an internationally renowned research organization. Although the history of today’s
Slovenian Migration Institute (SMI) extends somewhat farther back—to the 1960s—the year 1986 represents the most important turning point in its development.
