The paper discusses the terminology and the conceptualisations of belief in the history of European and American folkloristics. It examines the conceptualisation of beliefs as entities and folklore genre; as a cognitive reality, underlying various folklore genres; and a process, an act of believing. Finally, it reviews terminology in contemporary Slovenian folklore studies on belief and proposes the terminology in the Slovenian language.
