This thematic issue is dedicated to the role and understanding of cultural heritage and heritagisation in border regions or multicultural regions where different cultures and languages traditionally coexist(ed). It addresses the question of how heritage processes have been affected (and vice versa) by turbulent political-historical situations, in particular by changes in political borders (e.g. after the First and Second World Wars), the rise of populisms, demographic changes due to population transfers and “clashes” between different interpretations of the past and memories.
