Research data management
In compliance with the Decree on the implementation of scientific research work in accordance with the principles of open science and the requirements of the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency, all articles published in Studia mythologica Slavica must contain a ‘Research Data Statement’ in accordance with the open science principle “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”.
When drafting their statements, authors should consider this principle as well as the conditions of their research funding, the specific circumstances of their research work, and the epistemological and ethical guidelines of their scientific disciplines.
As editors of a journal with a strong emphasis on ethnographic research, we are aware that authors use a broad range of sources and materials, not all of which can be classified as research data. Those sources or materials classified as research data must be prepared in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). In their research data statements, authors should indicate which trusted data repository they use to store their research data (or other data storage arrangements). Authors can use online tools such as https://fairsharing.org or https://www.re3data.org to find a suitable data repository.
For additional information concerning data management in ethnographic research, authors may contact the editors of Studia mythologica Slavica (sasa.babic@zrc-sazu.si); they may also consult the guidelines of international ethnological and anthropological associations such as EASA and SIEF.
Exceptions to open access to research data
If research data cannot be fully shared for legal, ethical, or other valid reasons, authors must provide an explanation for limited access in their research data statements. Exceptions include, for example, cases involving the protection of personal data (see the EU General Data Protection Regulation), commercially sensitive or secret information regulated by legislation, or data involving security risks.
Citation of research data
Authors must cite all data sources appropriately (see author guidelines) or provide a suitable explanation in the research data statement if the cited data are not available digitally or have not been published due to other restrictions (e.g., Personal Data Protection Act (ZVOP-2), Copyright and Related Rights Act (ZASP)).
To facilitate the drafting of research data statements, we have prepared a few templates that authors may adapt to suit their specific case:
