Abstract

The article pursues the debate on what to do with one’s dead and how to do it. One is faced with a choice that is always condemning – either for myself or for the dead other, or, most often, for the both of us. In this paper, Freud’s conceptions of mourning and melancholia are confronted with Derrida’s ethics of melancholia, whereas the Lacanian (a)e(s)th(et)ics of choosing one’s own death turns out to be complimentary with Derrida’s rebellion against the end of mourning for the Other, and is met with the necessity of the realization that the Other has been dead forever, which opens up a potential for the (free) life of the Ego.
