Abstract

The paper examines the relationship between medieval and early modern science through an analysis of Grosseteste’s work De luce (On light). It attempts to answer the question of whether the original contributions of medieval science, in this case De luce, constituted an anticipation of early modern science to such an extent that it made the latter appear less revolutionary. Namely, in De luce we find two major deviations from the Aristotelian physical system: the beliefs that reality is mathematical and that matter is fundamentally one.
