ABBÉ DE SAINT-PIERRE, EUROPEAN UNION, AND THE ENLIGHTENED CRUSADE

Abstract

In his Projet pour rendre la paix parpétuelle en Europe, most often read in Rousseau's abstract, Saint-Pierre envisaged »European union« as the only means to enable Europe to dominate over the whole world. His plan to establish peace in Europe culminated in an appeal for a universal crusade and a war of extermination in which the »Turk« would be driven not only out of Europe but also out of Asia and Africa.
