Abstract

In the article the author deals with the question whether we can today, in the age of postmodernism still relevantly speak of avant-garde art. In author's opinion such art retains today only some of its previous importance. Also, the politicised avant- garde art, typical for some of the historic artistic avant- gardes and the neoavant-gardes has disappeared. The origins of the aims of avant-garde art can be traced to Romanticism, with the present »weak« artistic avant-gardes being devoid of many of the previous key features, the essential of which were linked to the eschatological nature of the often concurrent political avant-gardes. This situation has consequences also for aesthetics.
